Position Title:  Lead Instructor 

Status: Part-time, 3–6 Hours a Week

Start Date: October 2019 (Planning period starts late September)
 

CALARTS COMMUNITY ARTS PARTNERSHIP (CAP)
The world-renowned California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and its award-winning arts education program for youth, the CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP), partner with West Creek Academy, Rosedell Elementary School, and Bridgeport Elementary School to provide six to eight weeks of in-school Visual, Digital, and Performing Arts classes for the 2019-2020 academic year. Classes will be led by one alumni Lead instructor, and selected classes will be assisted by a CalArts student instructor. 

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Before each school semester begins, CalArts CAP instructors will meet with all their collaborating faculty at the partnering school for professional development and planning workshops. These sessions will focus on how CalArts CAP instructors can best integrate their curriculum to the core subject content being taught those semesters. CalArts CAP instructors will also work with partnering school faculty to build ways they can continue art instruction outside of the art classroom.

CULMINATION EVENTS
Parent Classroom Visits
On the eighth and final week of each grade level’s arts classes, parents will be invited into the classroom to observe classroom instruction and participate in the art activities.

Parent Workshops
CalArts CAP Instructors will hold evening workshops each semester for parents to learn and participate in exercises in the art forms taught at the partnering school. Each parent will create a piece of art or performance with their child, and receive strategies for encouraging and helping their student with their art classes at home.

Culmination Festival
Each semester will culminate with a final performance, screening, or gallery showing of the students’ work at a final culmination after school for family and friends.

OPEN POSITIONS

Grade 1 iPad Photography
Providing instruction in using iPad cameras to take digital photographs and edit them using Adobe Lightroom software.

Grade 3–6 Beginning Strings and Winds
Providing instruction on how to play string instruments (violin, viola, cello), brass instruments (trumpet and trombone)  or woodwind instruments (flute, clarinet, alto saxophone).

Regional Autism Assistance Program - Visual Art
Providing mixed media visual classes for students with autism in grades TK–6.

JOB DUTIES (include but are not limited to):

 TEACHING

  • Designing and implementing an engaging, concise, and effective 6 to 8-week curriculum appropriate for elementary school students in line with relevant California Visual and Performing Arts Standards. Syllabi and Lesson plans to be submitted to CalArts CAP Program Manager for review before the program begins.
  • Facilitating the assessment of participants’ achievement and skill levels (both formative and summative assessment).
  • Maintaining an efficient art classroom of 30-40 Elementary Schoolers for 30 minute - 1 hour classes.
  • Creating a safe learning environment that encourages student participation and creativity.
  • Designing and teaching a workshop for parents and students in relevant art form.

 SUPERVISING

  • (For some positions) Working with, training, and supervising the CalArts Student Instructor(s) (CSIs) in compliance with all State and Federal Labor Laws.
  • Working with the CAP Program Manager to resolve performance related issues regarding CSIs in the program.

PROGRAM SUPPORT

  • Attending all mandatory orientation & training sessions.
  • Available for and present at all class dates and events.
  • Creating a safe learning environment for youth participants and student instructors. Abiding by the rules, regulations, policies and directives of CalArts CAP as they now exist or as may be adopted by CalArts and/or CalArts CAP during the appointment period. Ensuring that student instructors follow all CalArts CAP policies & procedures at CalArts CAP Program sites.
  • Working in collaboration with the Program Manager to plan, coordinate and administrate the CalArts CAP class, including maintenance and storage of supplies and equipment, monitoring program budget expenses, and planning events.

REQUIREMENTS

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Exceptional ability to work well with and effectively relate to students, faculty and staff
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent classroom management skills with students Grades TK – 6
  • Reliable transportation to/from teaching sites
  • Punctuality at all class dates and events
  • Ability to assess students’ progress and skill levels objectively
  • Live Scan certification and TB clearance

EDUCATION 

  • BA degree in arts, education, community arts or relevant field of study. MA or MFA preferred

EXPERIENCE

  • In-depth knowledge and expertise in a specific arts discipline
  • At least 2 years previous experience instructing students Grades TK–6 in relevant art form (experience working in a school setting preferred)
  • Experience developing lesson plans and curriculum in line with California VAPA Standards
